If money is an issue, Backpacker magazine has found a number of boots under $100 that are worthy of even the most rugged terrain. One option is the Oboz Sawtooth boot. The heavyweight sole offers great traction and armor against slippery, loose, rocky terrain. Though the rise on the ankle isn't high, the stability from the reinforced sole and the ankle cushioning that became more comfortable as the hike progressed. Vasque Breeze GTX XCR
This shoe is slightly more expensive than the Oboz, but with a higher ankle rise and more rugged look. Rated well by many hikers, these boots offer a midrise ankle for support, great waterproofing, and excellent traction, even on muddy, slippery surfaces. The mesh-and-leather upper is very breathable. Hi-Tec Altitude IV
A great, affordable pair of boots, the Hi-Tec Altitude IV have excellent traction and a full-leather upper. The midrise ankle provides support. However, these are only water-resistant, not waterproof. Best for drier or desert hikes. These boots also only weigh in at 1.5 lbs per pair---great for those who desire a lighter pair of boots. Asolo PowerMatic 200 GV
This is a highly rated shoe, even for the most rough and tumble terrain. Expensive, but some consider them worth every penny. These shoes have a leather exterior with waterproof lining. They are rated to be comfortable for those carrying extra heavy loads-up to 80 pounds. Testers remarked that these required minimal break-in time. Available at Eastern Mountain sports for $245 in 2009.
Asolo TPS 520 GV hiking boots
The TPS stands for "Triple Power Structure," a design that incorporates three distinct shock absorbers in the shoe, to minimize impact. The rugged shoe is great for heading anywhere---even off trail, according to Backpacker magazine. Available at backcountry.com for approximately $225 in 2009.
