Italy has a reputation as being a very expensive country to visit, and few destinations do more to earn that reputation than Venice. However, this beautiful and timeless city by the Adriatic Sea does offer a handful of accommodation choices that will help a budgeting backpacker keep costs down to the minimum.

YHA Ostello di Venezia

Membership in the Hosteling International network is necessary to stay at this hostel, so those who do not already have a valid membership will be required to fill out the forms and pay for one before being admitted. Alternatively, you can automatically become a member by staying at the hostel for two nights and paying a higher rate. The building is converted from an old granary on Guidecca Island. There is Internet access, lockers are available, and breakfast and linens are included in the rates.

Backpackers Hostel Venice

This hostel is located on this main island of Venice, and bills itself as the only hostel situated as such. That places it very close to such locations as the Piazzale Roma, the Rialto Bridge and San Marco Square. It has a common room with Internet access, a pingpong table and a TV. The hostel opened in July 2009, and therefore is a recently renovated facility. However, there is a 1 a.m. curfew.

Hotel Giovannina

This is a one-star, budget hotel, and like the best accommodations in that category they offer three- and four-bed rooms that rival hostels in terms of keeping the housing budget down. Better still, all triple and quadruple rooms come with a private bath. It is located very close to the train station, and has Internet access, as well as its own bar and eatery on the premises.
