Traveling by Bus and Train
Waverly train station is Edinburgh's main train station and is located in the heart of the city. It is possible to take a train just about anywhere in the UK. Trains to London take about 4.5 hours. Check fare and timetable information online at thetrainline.com. To save money, buy tickets at least a week in advance.
The bus station is located at St. Andrew Square in the center of town. Fare and timetable information is available online at nationalexpress.com Buses are typically cheaper than trains but take longer. A bus to London takes about 9 hours.
Traveling by Air
The Edinburgh airport is located 8 miles outside of town and is serviced by bus. The bus takes about 30minutes, runs every 15 minutes and as of August 2009 costs £3 for a single. A taxi costs £13 and takes about twenty minutes.
The Glasgow International Airport is located 10 miles outside of the city and is serviced by bus and train. Travel between Glasgow and Edinburgh takes about an hour. The two cities are connected by bus, train and motorway.
The only direct, nonstop flights from Edinburgh to the USA are to JFK with Delta and Continental. For other destinations it will be necessary to fly into a major European hub such as London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Paris to make connections.
Glasgow International Airport offers direct nonstop flights to New York (Continental), Philadelphia (US Airways), and Orlando (Virgin Atlantic Airways).
Traveling by Car
An excellent system of motorways links Edinburgh to the rest of Scotland and the UK. Travel time to York and Manchester is about 4 hours, Newcastle is about 2.5 hours. Birmingham is about 5.5 hours, London is about 8.5 hours, Inverness is about 3 hours, and Aberdeen is about 2 hours. Keep in mind that the British drive on the left side of the road. Motorways are typically busy, especially in summer and during holiday weekends.
