Roti
While most people are familiar with naan, roti is the healthier option when it comes to Indian breads. Naan is made from white flour and rubbed with butter, but roti is typically whole wheat and served in smaller portions. Since whole wheat packs more nutrients and fills you up better than white flour, you won't feel as if you are missing out with the smaller servings.
Paneer Tikka
Paneer, an Indian cheese, is an excellent alternative to meat, as it is high in protein. However, most paneer dishes are coated with butter or cream-based sauces that quickly add calories and fat to your dish. One exception is paneer tikka, for which the paneer is grilled in a tandoor, or cylindrical oven. Think of it like a grilled tofu dish, with an excellent set of spices that give your meal a real kick.
Aloo Gobi
An exceptional combination of potatoes, cauliflower and plenty of turmeric, aloo gobi is a great option for those looking to eat healthy. There are a number of variations of this dish, but all feature the three class ingredients listed above. Other additions include tomatoes, curry leaves, onions and garlic.
Matar Pulao
Basically a rice pilaf with peas, matar pulao can be a flavorful alternative to cream-based curry dishes. Matar pulao has a delicious texture and knockout flavor. Matar pulao is also a great medium for trying out some of the basic Indian sauces, particularly yogurt and mint sauce.
