Things to Do on Big Island Hawaii

Things to Do on Big Island Hawaii
The Big Island is the perfect place in Hawaii to visit if you are interested in the natural splendor and wild pleasures of the islands more than the touristy kitsch. While the crowds tend to gravitate toward Maui and Oahu, the Big Island welcomes those who come to the Pacific island chain to enjoy the rough and tumble excitement featuring lava flows and manta rays.

Volcanoes National Park Night Hike

The lava flows and eruptions are spectacular during the day but can't possibly compare to how they look at night. This guided tour can last as long 10 hours, so bring comfortable shoes and clothing. The tour starts at noon, and most of the time is spent hiking through Volcanoes National Park as you pass by steam vents, stop by a lava tube and get treated to the majesty of Halemaumau Crater. As the sun begins to set, prepare for a four-hour tour highlighted by the eerie red radiance of the lava burning bright in the night.

Night Diving with Manta Rays

After spending one night well above sea level, try diving beneath the surface of the sea the next night to go face to face with manta rays. Manta rays are fairly harmless creatures, though they can look like an alien creature from the bottom. Adding to the otherworldly ambiance is the fact that your dive takes place at night, aided only by artificial light.

Volcano Bike Tours

More than just another bike trail, this is like a tour of the Earth's climate. On your three- to four-hour bike tour you will go from a lush rainforest to the moonscape-like volcanic craters. Don't worry about packing your favorite bike because a Giant Sedona Comfort Hybrid Bike is provided along with a helmet, gloves and a windbreaker. The climax of the tour will be the sight of earth being created before your very eyes as the volcanoes spew fire and smoke or the lava flows glow.
