Sorrento is a quiet town, sitting across the Bay of Naples from Naples, and is best known for its limoncello (lemon liqueur), handicrafts, and its popularity among tourists to the Bay of Naples area. For outdoors enthusiast, the area includes sea kayaking and snorkeling off the island of Capri, hiking the towering heights of Mount Vesuvius, and exploring the fabled ruins of Pompeii. There are several affordable hostels in Sorrento for backpackers and cyclists.

Seven Hostel

This hostel has a front desk that is open 24 hours a day. It offers both normal dorms with bunk beds plus a dozen private rooms with their own bathrooms. The hostel is nicely appointed in a thoroughly modern, European fashion. It has its own café and bar, a terrace, a solarium, an Internet-TV room, and a library-games room. In 2009, the cheapest dorm beds were 19 euros out of season (November to February) and 23 euros at the peak season (June to September).

Casa Susy

Casa Susy is just a 10 minute walk from the Sorrento town center. The house's many balconies provide great views of the local area. There are no dorms, but there are double and triple rooms; all rooms have private bathrooms, and breakfast is included in the room price. There is no curfew or lock-out.

Ulisse Deluxe

The Ulisse Deluxe Hotel is more of a one-star budget hotel than a proper hostel, due to the lack of open bunks. However, there are rooms with more than two beds that can accommodate groups of people. That makes it a natural choice for couples or older backpackers who just aren't quite willing to share a night's sleep with nine other people on their vacation anymore. The hotel has a swimming pool and small fitness center, and will happily arrange for boat and bike rentals.

Hostel Le Sirene

This hostel enjoys a good location, being about 5 minutes from both the train station and from the sea. Linens and towels are included in the room rate, there is no curfew or lock-out, and there is Internet access. Staying at the La Sirene also includes free passes to a local disco. However, there is no common kitchen, which is not typical for a proper hostel. In 2009, private double rooms per night were 25 euros in the off season and 30 euros during the peak season, while a bunk in the dorm was 16 euros.
