The Best Hotels in Denver, Colorado
If you're traveling by air to the Colorado ski and hiking areas, there's a good chance that your flight will land in Denver. Most of the ski and hiking areas have a base elevation of 8,000 to 10,000 feet. Unless you're coming from another high-altitude location, acclimation is advisable. Denver has an elevation of 5,280 feet, making it a perfect place for altitude adjustment. It's a vibrant city in its own right, with an abundance of cultural, shopping, outdoor activities and modern hotels. However, to truly appreciate the Colorado mountains, it helps to get a sense of its history as a mining state. The following hotels have done a good job at preserving that history, while providing special amenities to outdoor enthusiasts.

Hotel Monaco

The Hotel Monaco is housed in two of Denver's historic buildings; the 1917 Railway Exchange Building and the 1937 Art Modern Title Building. Its proximity to the 16th Street pedestrian mall makes it an excellent location for anyone who wants to explore the city by foot. Hikers can sign up for the Get Your Green On, Eco Friendly Package, which includes a Denver trail map, a water bottle, 24-hour access to the hotel fitness room and a package of trail mix. If you arrive by car, and if you are driving a hybrid, you'll receive free valet parking with this package. The Hotel Monaco also offers a Body, Mind & Soul package. It includes a massage or facial at the Monaco's Aveda Renaissance Spa. For those traveling with their dogs, the Hotel Monaco offers four hours of dog sitting, as well as in-room use of dog beds and dog bowls.

The Brown Palace Hotel

The Brown Palace Hotel opened on Aug. 12, 1892. It's named after Henry Brown, who owned the land the hotel occupies. Brown and his wife were heading west to the California Gold Rush, but their plans changed when his wife fell in love with Denver. The Browns homesteaded 160 acres of land, which later be called Capitol Hill. Legend has it that one afternoon, Brown walked into the bar at the Windsor Hotel. The bartender looked at Brown's cowboy attire with disdain and refused to serve him. Brown decided to build his own hotel. The Brown Palace exterior is made from Colorado red granite and Arizona sandstone, and is ornamented with 26 hand-carved stone medallions depicting local wildlife.

The Brown offers a Destination Denver package. For $12, you get an itinerary of free things to do in Denver and a sack lunch. Those working on the Denver Habitat for Humanity Building Project can pay $69 for a box lunch to take to the work site. Upon your return, you'll get a choice of a hand or foot soak, and a 25-minute massage at the Spa at The Brown Palace. The hotel donates $30 of the fee to Habitat to Humanity.

The Oxford Hotel

The story of the Oxford Hotel unfolds in the 1890s. Thanks to railroad development, Denver had become the third largest city in the West. Adolph Zang, owner of the Zang Brewing Co., realized the financial potential of a hotel located near Union Station. He financed the building of the Oxford Hotel. When it opened in 1891, the Oxford boasted its own power plant, steam heat, and electric and gas lighting. The elevator, which was then called a vertical railway, brought guests to the top floor, where they marveled over the spectacular views of the Rockies. Despite the Silver Panic of 1893, the Oxford prevailed. Today, its location in Denver's hip and trendy LoDo District makes it a popular hotel for anyone who wants to explore the city by foot. It is three blocks from Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies baseball team, and five blocks to the Pepsi Center, which is home to the Denver Nuggets basketball team and the Colorado Avalanche hockey team. Guests can use the Oxford Fitness Center, which offers special sports conditioning classes.
