Located just a short drive from Denpasar and its international airport, Bali's Kuta Beach has been a magnet for surfers for decades. The tourist town that has grown up around the beach has become one of the world's major budget tourist districts, rivaling such places as Khao San Road in Bangkok, or Thamel in Kathmandu. While most of the accommodations in Kuta are low budget and geared towards backpackers and surf rats, with Bali's poshest resorts being located elsewhere, there are some upscale places to stay.

Suka Beach Inn

The Suka Beach Inn is something of a gem amid the pile of guest houses and budget hotels of Kuta. The rooms are in the nice-but-spartan style one should expect for the best backpackers: the basic furniture, private bathroom and an electric fan. However, they come with the added touch that most rooms have a nice balcony, and there is a private pool as well. Breakfast is included, and typically consists of toast, eggs, fruit, and tea or coffee. The Suka Beach Inn is located in the warren of alleyways that makes up the Poppies I and II area (a pair of major alleyways), and to find it it's best to ask for directions upon arrival in the area, as street numbers can be misleading. It is about a ten minute walk from Kuta Beach. As with so many backpackers, prices are negotiable, so be sure to ask if there isn't a cheaper option upon arrival to open negotiations.

Bali Sorgawi Hotel

The Bali Sorgawi Hotel occupies a nice niche between bargain basement and truly upscale. It is located just down the road from backpacker central at Poppies I and II, and about six or seven minutes walk from the beach. There are only 36 rooms, creating a small, cozy feel to the place. The facilities include a swimming pool, a restaurant, and a small fitness center and spa. The rooms are nicely appointed, each with a TV and air conditioning. Overall, it is an exemplary 2 star hotel that offers a lot of bang for the buck.

Bali Garden Hotel

Staying right next to Kuta Beach will mean going upscale, and the Bali Garden Hotel is a good choice for doing exactly that. This 4 star hotel is directly across the road from Kuta Beach, and it has both a beach-view pool, plus a separate swimming pool adjoining its spa. There are four bars, two restaurants, a cafe and a coffee shop on the premises. In addition to its range of rooms, the hotel also has a three bedroom villa with kitchen.

This 4 star franchise hotel is also located directly adjacent to Kuta Beach. There are three restaurants and four bars. The swimming pool is decorated with waterfalls and a Balinese-style pura (shrine), and comes with a jacuzzi. There is a health club, spa and sauna as well. The hotel has WiFi service available, and there are rooms ranging from the standard type Superior Room to spacious residence suites.
