The California wine country encompasses the northern portion of the state, where about 400 local wineries operate. The most well known areas are the Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, and also the Tri-Valley region. In recent years, tourists began to discover the appeal of the area, and Californians now consider it one of the premier travel destinations. Tourist attractions include natural hot springs, spas, and of course a number of restaurants.

FlatIron Grill in Napa Valley

The FlatIron Grill is a classic steak house decorated in rich burgundies and browns. Enjoy the modern accents as well as the old fashioned elegance, complete with century-old glass panel partitions. Dinner starts at 4:30 p.m., but you may enjoy lunch on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 11:30 a.m. The menu offers a mix of comfort foods, such as macaroni and cheese with bacon or smoked chicken quesadilla, while the entrees provide a choice of beef, poultry, and seafood. Dinner entrees start at $15 for the Mahi-Mahi fish and chips up to $27 for the grilled filet mignon. Pastas, salads that are meals themselves, and burgers are other food options. Finish your meal with a dessert wine, Moscato D'Oro, or a peach tart. As you may expect, this Napa Valley restaurant has a sizeable wine list that features a number of local vintages. Ask your server to help you pair a wine with your dinner.

Ca'Bianca Italian Restaurant in Sonoma Valley

Visit Ca'Bianca for a weekday lunch from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., or for dinner starting at 5 p.m. seven days a week. The restaurant is in the historic Marshall House, built in 1876, and renovated and refurbished to comply with modern codes and standards. Diners enjoy the rich detail work of carved moldings and the Italian ambiance created with crystal fixtures and ceiling murals. The dishes have classical Italian influences, such as Sicilian and Milanese dishes. Against the luxurious surroundings, the prices of the entrees are surprisingly affordable. Fettuccine with black truffles and duck ragu starts at $19, while sautéed sea bass is about $24. You will find pasta dishes on the menu, but also more adventurous entrees, such as pork tenderloin in port wine with pears for $22. The exterior is a locale for destination weddings, and banquet rooms accommodate receptions with 100 attendees. Choose wines from the local California wine country as well as Italian vintages to complement your meal.

Oasis Grille in the Tri-Valley Region

The Oasis Grille is a Mediterranean-themed restaurant and wine bar. It is open daily from 11 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. The emphasis is on light but filling meals against a backdrop of an extended happy hour. Rather than relying on standard booths and cloth-covered dining tables, the Oasis Grille features overstuffed chairs and sofas that give the venue the look and feel of a lounge. This restaurant is a great Tri-Valley choice for dessert, a glass of wine with friends, or a sit-down meal. The menu features grilled seafood, flatbreads, lamb and unusual Mediterranean entrees. Don't miss the baklava for dessert and the extensive wine choices.
