Camping in Snowdonia National Park

Named for Snowdown, the highest mountain in Wales at 3,560 feet, Snowdonia National Park is one of the more beautiful corners of Britain. It extends for 823 square miles, including 23 miles of coastline on the Irish Sea. However, it is not a national park in the way Americans tend to think of one. There are towns and villages and people live and work there, making it more of a place where private development is restricted, not just a national land reserve.

Barcdy Caravan and Camping Park

This campground is situated in a lightly wooded vale. The RV sites have water and electric hook-ups, and tent sights have an electrical outlet as well. There is a laundry facility, hot water showers, flush toilets, sinks for dishwashing and wireless Internet. However, the campground does not allow pets. The site is very close to the sea and is in the vicinity of the famed Harlech Castle and the quirky Italiant village Portmeirion. The latter was the setting of the cult classic 1960s British television series "The Prisoner."

Glanllyn-Lakeside Caravan and Camping Park

This facility has a wide range of accommodation facilities and bears some resemblance to an American KOA (Kampgrounds of America). There are water and electric hook-ups for RVs and outlets for tents; and permanent trailers and a lodge are available for those who don't really want to camp out. The grounds include a playground, hot showers, laundry, flush toilets and access to a lake with swimming, fishing and sailing. There are several Welsh trail heads in the near vicinity, and the Tryweryn National Whitewater Centre is only five miles away.

Graig Wen

Graig Wen has water and electrical hook-ups at its RV sites, but there are only eight of them. A tailgate camping area with 15 sites accommodates both RVs and tents, but there are no hook-ups for the former. The RV and tailgate camping areas have hot showers and flush toilets. The tents-only area is joyfully removed from the RVs, but it is a more primitive area where the only facilities are pit toilets and local, untreated water sources. Greg Wen rents four-person bell tents with set-up included. They also have luxury yurts, cottages, and a bed and breakfast. Located very close to an inlet of the Irish Sea, the immediate area offers fishing, sailing, kayaking, horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking.
