The Best Distance Running Shoes

The Best Distance Running Shoes
Shoes are a key element of running, whether you run a few blocks to catch the bus or run marathons every weekend. Never is the cushioning, stability and support provided by a running shoe more important than when you're running great distances. When selecting a shoe for distance running, determine what type of running shoe that you need based upon your feet (neutral cushioning, stability or motion control), and take a close look at the models the experts recommend.

Pearl Izumi SyncroInfinity

Fitness Magazine selected the SyncroInfinity in a list of the "Best Stability Sneakers," stating that they're great for "high-mileage runners" and offer a durable, high-traction outsole. The shoe provides a stable template while still delivering ample cushioning. Pearl Izumi recommends it for both training and racing. The SyncroInfinity features a carbon rubber outsole for durability, and both forefoot and heel padding.

La Sportiva Fireblade Trail Running Shoe

When it comes to the variable terrain found in trail running and ultramarathons, durability and grip are key. The La Sportiva Fireblade Trail Running Shoe was the weapon of choice for professional ultra-runner Karl Meltzer when he attempted a record hike of the Appalachian Trail (that's 2,175 miles of rugged off-road) in 2008. Meltzer had nothing but kind words for the shoes, stating in a review on Backcountry: "I've been running in Fireblade now for a year, and no other shoe compares to the sleek low profile. The shoes just seem fast!... They last, don't break down and provide ultimate support for any Ultramarathon." Meltzer raved about the durability of the shoes, stating that he only went through a few pairs on his 54-day Appalachian Trail run. The shoes feature a roomy toebox, a triple-density midsole and a Frixion AT Racing Sole.

Mizuno Wave Alchemy 10

Runner's World gave the Mizuno Wave Alchemy 10 its "Best Update" designation in its Fall 2010 Running Shoes Guide, and recommended it for both training and long runs. The magazine liked the way the shoes combined stability and cushioning, stating that the extra layer of foam Mizuno added in the new model made a discernible difference. It also raved about the light weight and flexibility of the shoe. The shoe includes a variety of features like a midsole ventilation system to prevent overheating, carbon rubber to increase durability and traction in the outsole, and Airmesh uppers.
