Fall is an ideal time for mountain biking. The surroundings are free from the scorching heat of summer but abundant in autumn's serene colors of oranges and reds. Tune up your mountain bike and tackle a terrain that climbs through rough surfaces and is surrounded by thick, forested areas. Views of trees like junipers and maples topped with varying colors of yellow, red and orange can make your cycling adventure even more exhilarating.

Sherando Lake Loop

Sherando Lake Loop in Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, is recommended by the Virginia Tourism Corporation as a top fall biking destination. The trail is located in the Sherando Lake Recreation Area and is part of George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. The loop has an 18.2-mile single-track trail with a combination of dirt and paved roads. Prepare for a challenging but rewarding terrain as the loop has more than 1,000 feet of vertical climbing and features views of the Shenandoah Valley. Expect to see orange-red paprika colors of sassafras trees and scarlets and burnt oranges of maples and dogwoods. Other sights include varying colors of golden and lemon-like yellows of birches and hickories. Hillsides along the trail will show colors of bright greens, marigolds, reds and oranges.

Surrounded by forested areas of fir, spruce and northern hardwoods, the Leicester Hollow Trail bursts with attractive colors of reds and oranges during fall.

Juniper Ridge Trail

Juniper Ridge Trail is along the outskirts of Mount St. Helens in Washington. The trail is part of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and is brightly brushed in colors during the fall season. Juniper Ridge Trail is recommended by Amy Poffenbarger, co-author of "Mountain Bike America: Washington." Take your mountain bike for a ride along Juniper Ridge's length of 11.6 miles and elevation ranges of 3,400 to 4,800 feet above sea level. At the first two miles, the trail climbs through conifers and then follows the ridge line to the base of Sunrise Peak. Expect a scenic ride that runs through meadows, ponds and mountain zones filled with changing leaf colors of conifer, maple, juniper and pine trees.
