Backpacking is an adventure but also a physical challenge that puts a strain on your body. When choosing backpacking food items, make a checklist that puts into consideration factors such as weight, nutrition and personal taste preference. Select food items that will replenish your body sufficiently for the entire duration of your hiking trip as well as foods that won't spoil.

Lightweight

Choose food items that are lightweight to lessen the load on your back, especially if you plan on trekking strenuous terrain. The best choices are compact foods that require little preparation. Bring items like granola bars, dried fruit, trail mix, powdered milk, crackers, lunch meat and candy bars. Lightweight food items are not only easy to carry and eat, they are also ideal for a quick snack to boost your energy levels and lessen fatigue.

High Energy

Hiking for miles can take a toll on your body, so you need to choose energy-boosting types of food to replenish energy levels. Pack foods rich in carbohydrates, starches and sugars like crackers, cereals and noodles. Foods rich in protein are also necessary, including canned meat, canned soup, dried eggs, cheeses, dried milk, chocolate and nuts.

Nutritious and Healthy

Aside from food items that are lightweight and high energy, it's also important to make smart choices when selecting backpacking meals. Nutritious food are essential for endurance and recovery. Avoid foods with empty calories and those that can make you thirsty. Dried fruits, nuts and granola are excellent sources of nutrients. And don't forget to bring enough water and other hydration for your trip.
