As lighthouses become obsolete with modern technology, many historic structures risk ruin and neglect. Several lighthouses have been restored and now offer romantic bed and breakfast type accommodations. Lighthouses are located in gorgeous coastal areas where outdoor recreation opportunities abound, so travelers may want to choose a night in a historic lighthouse during the next trip to the coast.

West Point Lighthouse

Built in 1875, the West Point Lighthouse lies on the southwestern tip of Canada's Prince Edward Island. The lighthouse was manned until 1963 and now the bright red light operates electrically. Restoration of the lighthouse began in 1982 and West Point opened as a tourist attraction complete with museum, lodging, and interpretative trails in 1983.

To stay in the actual lighthouse, make sure to reserve the Tower room located on the second floor of the West Point Lighthouse. All other rooms are found in newly expanded inn connected to the original lighthouse.

Rose Island Lighthouse

Rose Island Lighthouse lies off the coast of Newport, Rhode Island, just about a mile from shore. Built in 1870, the lighthouse was badly vandalized after its abandonment in 1971. Thanks to the City of Newport and the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation, the lighthouse was relit in 1993. Tours of the lighthouse are given daily during the summer months and guests can stay overnight in one of two keeper's bedrooms. If one night is not enough, you can stay for a week as part of their Keeper of the Week Program. Guests stay for one week and perform volunteer projects during their stay.
