Dockside Charters
The optimum time for halibut fishing out of Skagway is in May or in August and September. The guides and captain at Dockside Charters offer full day trips for halibut fishing. Plan on being out and on the water for eight to nine hours, and bring rain gear, warm clothes, hats, gloves and sunglasses.
Dockside Charters provides professional guides and the use of fishing rods, reels, tackle and bait. Guides assist with gaffing and bringing large fish into the boat. Basic fish cleaning is done on the boat, with filleting and arrangements for smoking and shipping done at the docks.
The captain and crew request you do not bring any bananas with you for lunch or snacks, and are serious about it. Bananas are considered bad luck for seagoing vessels and crew.

Chilkoot Charters and Tours
Chilkoot Charters and Tours arranges custom halibut charters with their operation. Halibut charters need to be booked in advance, so the captain and crew have time to gather the halibut equipment. Charters include captain, boat, crew and fishing gear. You provide your own lunch, drinks, coolers, rain gear, hats, gloves, sunglasses and any other personal items you require.
Charters are full-day affairs, so plan on being out for eight or nine hours. Chilkoot Charters heads south toward Sturgill's Landing, or the waters outside of neighboring Haines for prime halibut opportunities. Once you land your catch, have it smoked, filleted and shipped home with arrangements being made through Chilkoot Charters.

Choctaw Charters
Choctaw Charters arranges halibut charters out of Skagway Harbor. Expect to be on the water between four to five hours for half-day trips, or eight or nine hours on a full day's excursion. You head out to the deep waters of the southern Taiya Inlet, deep jigging for the bottom dwelling flatfish.
Your charter includes fishing gear and tackle use, guides, captain, boat, assistance with gaffing and landing the fish as well as shipboard fish cleaning. Filleting and smoking is arranged through the Juneau-based Alaska Seafood Company.
Choctaw Charters is available for hire on a custom basis as well, offering the boat and crew for full-day customized fishing trips.
