For those traveling through the Orlando, Florida, area that prefer the natural world to Disney World, the city of Saint Cloud beckons. A 33-minute drive south of the city, Saint Cloud offers RV parks, close proximity to prime outdoor habitats and accessibility via a major highway. Whether fly fishing in the Indian River, mountain biking along Alligator Lake or discovering the areas diverse bird life, the Saint Cloud area is worth the drive.

Canoe Creek Campground

Canoe Creek Campground is located 14 minutes from central Saint Cloud. Facilities include 225 back-in sites with full hookups and 50-amp service, a pool and recreation hall. Outdoor enthusiasts have multiple options to choose from including air-boat tours of Lake Tohopekaliga and hiking within the 12,000-acre Disney Wilderness Preserve, managed by the Nature Conservancy and dedicated to preserving area wetlands. Bird lovers in particular will find the preserve appealing, especially during the winter migratory season.

Floridian RV Resort

The Floridian RV Resort is located 20 minutes from central Saint Cloud. Facilities include 457 pull-through and back-in sites with full hookups and 50-amp service as well as a boat ramp for canal access to Lake Tohopekaliga. Once the RV is parked, guests can drive six minutes west to begin their exploration of the Split Oak Forest Wildlife and Environmental Area, where 2,000 acres are set aside to protect the natural habitat of the gopher tortoise. Other visitors include the common loon, lesser scaup and the glossy ibis.

Ponderosa RV Park

The Ponderosa RV Park is located in Kissimmee, 14 minutes from central Saint Cloud. Facilities include 200 pull-through and back-in sites with full hookups and 20-, 30- or 50-amp service, a basketball court and playground. Those who love to fish will be delighted to discover that Lake Tohopekaliga, a five minute drive, and East Lake Tohopekaliga, an eight-minute drive, are noted for their populations of largemouth bass. These lakes are a part of the larger Kissimmee Waterway and include canals, creeks and rivers that can also be fished.
