Longview is more than a typical east Texas piney woods small town. A diverse number of trees that include oak, maple and cedar announce springtime, shade the long hot summer days, and in autumn their foliage lights the rolling hills of Longview's countryside afire. In less than an hour's drive from Longview, you can be camping next to a lake, mountain biking on a shaded forest trail, or fishing for perch from a jon boat.

Martin Creek Lake State Park

The 286-acre Martin Creek Lake State Park is 26 miles south of Longview. There are 60 campsites with electrical and water hook-ups that can be used for tent camping. The facilities in the main campsite include restrooms with showers, fire rings and picnic tables. There are an additional 12 primitive hike-in campsites located on an island on Martin Creek Lake, accessible by a footbridge or boat. There is a 1.5-mile nature trail and a 7.5-mile single-track mountain bike trail, both covered by trees and beautiful during the foliage color changes in the fall. The relatively small, 5,000-acre lake is the draw for many visitors who enjoy swimming, boating and year-round fishing that includes an annual children's perch fishing contest in September.
