Port Isabel is a small resort community on the southwestern end of South Padre Island, in the Gulf of Mexico waters of the Texas Coast. Known affectionately as the Texas Riviera, this island boasts saltwater fishing for species such as bonefish, tarpon, marlin and jacks. Port Isabel hosts many fishing guides, charters and services to get you on the water, fishing for these sport fish and watching the wildlife that surrounds the region. As of July, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill was affecting the fishing and tourism businesses of South Padre Island.

Dolphin Docks

The crew and guides at Dolphin Docks takes you out for a day or half day charter fishing the deep waters for red snapper, grouper, ling, shark, vermillion snapper, dorado or amberjack. Charters provide the fishing guides and boat, use of fishing rods and reels, bait and tackle, iced fish storage and a shaded cabin to escape the intense Gulf sun.

Arrangements for filleting, smoking or flash freezing and shipping your catch is available upon return to the harbor. Prepare for the trip and bring sun hats, glasses, long sleeved shirts, lunch and snacks, drinks and sunscreen.

Pirate's Landing Pier

If you feel like doing some self-guided fishing along the Port Isabel coast, head to the Pirate's Landing Pier, the longest pier in Texas. Fishing for species such as redfish, flounder and amberjack is possible off the pier, and there are bait and tackle shops found at the entrance to the long dock and jetty.

There is a monthly fishing tournament with a $500 top prize. Check with the local bait and tackle shops to see what the conditions are when visiting or to purchase entry tickets to the fishing derby. Pole and rod rentals are available at the pier.
