Grand Slam Big Five Pan Fish Contest
The Grand Slam Pan Fish Contest begins the slew of ice-fishing competitions near Duluth during the winter season. The contest is in January and begins at 6 a.m., continuing until 2 p.m. Competitors must pay a $25 dollar entry fee, as of 2010, and may fish anywhere on Fish Lake. The fisherman with the heaviest five pan fish at the weigh in will be awarded a power auger for drilling fishing holes in the ice.

United Northern Sportsmen Ice Fishing Contest
The United Northern Sportsmen's Club's annual ice fishing contest is a long-time tradition in the Duluth area. It is a three-hour-long competition in late January. Fishermen compete on Island Lake at the club's headquarters. The top prize for the largest catch of the day is $1,000.

Duluth's Big Jig Ice Fishing Contest
The Big Jig Ice Fishing Contest takes place in February on Pike Lake near Duluth, between noon and 3 p.m. The contest offers $50,000 in prizes and is limited to 3,000 entries. First prize is $5,000. The entry fee for the competition is $35 per line with a two line maximum.

One of the last ice fishing events of the season is the Last Chance Ice Fishing Contest in late February. The Kiwanis Club of Cloquet sponsors the event on Fish Lake. The entry fee is $25 per person. The contest offers a variety of prizes for the biggest fish, regardless of species.
