Chicago's close proximity to Lake Michigan, the Mississippi River and many small streams and fast rivers make it a good place for kayakers to enjoy their sport. The Chicago area has several kayaking clubs. These organizations offer kayakers of all skill levels a chance to learn more about the sport while making friends and taking trips to surrounding waters.

Chicago Kayak Club

The Chicago Kayak Club is an organization aimed at sea kayakers in the Chicago area. It offers classes, club trips, a variety of clinics and volunteer conservation projects. The club provides members with free club kayaks during group trips, as well as a supportive environment where you can learn new kayaking skills and techniques.

The club usually holds its outings between April and October, and the outings are often in or around the Southern Florida Coastline. Off-season trips are less frequent and sometimes include such activities as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Smaller paddling trips are in the Chicago area and take place one to three times a week during the regular season and are commonly held at Skokie Lagoons near Chicago.

The club's yearly membership dues are $100 and includes free kayak use for Chicago-based trips, regular email news, access to kayak storage facilities, a quarterly newsletter and discounts at several Chicago based retailers. The membership does not include transportation, parking and camping fees, meals, nonkayak related equipment and personal gear.
