Kayak fishing has enjoyed a growth in popularity over the last few years, making kayak manufacturers take notice and produce kayaks designed exclusively for fishing. These new kayaks have wide beams, sit-on top decks, rod holders, and recessed hatches for fish storage. Here are some of the kayaks that are considered better options for kayak fishing.

Ocean Kayaks Prowler Trident 13 Angler

With a 29.5-inch beam, the solo paddler Prowler Trident 13 Angler provides a stable casting and fishing platform while giving the paddler an ease of movement and ability to achieve hull speed. In addition to the mid-size and stable beam, the kayak is equipped with rod holders, deck bungy-cord, fish storage, a small internal tackle box, rod pods, and a fish-finder/transducer compatible scupper. Handles for moving the kayak onto roof racks or from the car to the water make it easy to maneuver solo.

Ocean Kayak Malibu 2 XL Angler - Tandem Kayak

The Malibu 2 XL Angler, also made by Ocean Kayaks, is a tandem sea kayak designed for fishing. The two seats are spaced to help prevent rod tangles. There are rod holders, handles for transport, recessed fish hatch storage, deck bungy-cords, a tank well, four deck mounts and paddle leashes. The kayak has a 34-inch beam, making in a very stable at-rest fishing platform. With two paddlers the kayak's beam presents very little hindrance in achieving hull speed when paddling from fishing locale to the next.

Malibu Kayaks - Stealth 12

The Stealth 12, made by Malibu Kayaks, is a fishing specific solo kayak. There are three storage hatches on the boat, designed for tackle, fish and other relevant gear. The sit-on top design gives a sturdy platform to cast and reel from. There are fixtures where a foot rudder can be installed. Bungy cords keep excess gear readily available on the decks. The Stealth's 33-inch beam makes it solid and stable. Two rod holders located in the front of the boat allow the paddler to rest and enjoy the water while waiting for fish to strike, or troll while paddling.
