Pop-up tents are designed to be put up quickly and easily. Pop-up tents typically are not designed for rugged backcountry excursions, but rather for campground and car camping trips. However, some new pop-up tents on the market challenge the belief that they aren't suitable for the backcountry.

Pinnacle

Pinnacle makes pop-up tents that are used in the famous off-road Paris-Dakar Rally across the Sahara Desert. The tents go up quickly, because the poles are left in their housings. All that's required is a quick toss of the tent, much like you'd throw a Frisbee. The tent unfolds during the toss, the poles lock into place and the tent is upright in seconds. Once the tent is open, you simply stake it down. Pinnacle tents Nos. XP3033-2 and XPP60-2 fold down to 34 inches and weigh a svelte 5 lbs. Because these tents are designed for the riggers of adventure racing, early results indicate they can withstand the elements and hard use.

Ace Canopy

Ace Canopy makes a set of pop-up tents that can be used for events and parties and by vendors. A variety of sizes and heights are available. Ace pop-ups use aluminum telescoping poles that house into each other. The tents go up quickly and are stout even in high winds. The tents don't have any walls--just a reinforced canvas canopy and four legs. Enclosed pop-ups are available and come with canvas walls. These heavy tents are best suited for parties and as impromptu gazebos in the field.
