Philipsburg is about 25 miles south of I-90 in the middle of Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest in southwestern Montana. The location makes the area a convenient stop and a central base for RV campers who seek to pursue the boating, fishing, cycling and hiking opportunities present in the recreation areas of the national forest.

The Inn

The Inn in Philipsburg is a combination motel and campground; the latter offers campsites for RVs. The sites are unpaved and in an open field, so there is no shade and big rigs might have problems with soft earth. However, each site comes with full hookups; the park welcomes pets; and the facility is roughly ? of a mile of Philipsburg's small historic district and its restaurants. The RV park is open year-round, so it offers access to trout fishing in nearby Rock Creek and winter sports at the Discovery Ski Area, about a 20-minute drive from Philipsburg.

Boulder Creek Cabins and RV Park

Boulder Creek Cabins and RV Park provides campsites with full hookups, and patrons have access to the Boulder Creek Lodge, which has a bar with a big stone fireplace, a restaurant that is open on weekends and a hot tub behind the building. With two streams and over 30 lakes near the park, which is located at the foot of the Pintler Mountains, the RV park serves as a base for anglers. Gem Mountain, which is a 25-minute drive away, offers the opportunity to pan and sift for sapphires.

Philipsburg Bay Campground

A national forest facility set on the shores of Georgetown Lake, this campground is both a place to stay and an outdoor attraction. While the facility has 60-foot paved campsites suitable for all but the biggest rigs, none has hookups. The local water source is a hand-pumped well. Campsites come with fire grills and picnic tables, and firewood is available from the campground manager. The campground has direct access to the lake for boating and fishing, as well as biking and hiking trails in the national forest. Aspiring geologists will find a wealth of places to explore. The campground is about 10 miles south of Philipsburg.
