The Best Summer Sleeping Bags

The Best Summer Sleeping Bags
Choosing the right summer sleeping bag depends on your needs as a camper. If you plan on camping up in the mountains or into the fall, you will want a warmer bag exclusively for warm weather camping. If you are planning on extensive backpacking, it would be worth it to spend some extra money to buy a lighter, less bulky bag when a heavier, cheaper one would do fine for casual camping. Consider your needs and your budget to pick the summer bag that is best for you.

Montbell Ultra Light Super Spiral Down

The Montbell Ultra Light Super Spiral Down is the winner of Outside Online's Summer Gear of the Year award in the category of sleeping bags. This down sleeping bag is equipped with spiraled baffles which, according to Outside Online, "drape more evenly over the body, creating a closer fit." The seams use elastic thread, which makes the sleeping bag hug your body, further conserving heat. At 2.3 lbs, this bag is also considered lightweight, but its 15 degrees Fahrenheit rating insures that it will keep you warm and comfortable well past the summer.

Sierra Designs Nitro 30

Winner of Backpacker Magazine’s Best All-Around award for 2009, the Sierra Designs Nitro 30 is a popular all-around summer bag. This bag is equipped with a hood with elastic baffles and a half-length zipper to help conserve thermal efficiency which, according to Backpacker, adds up to a bag which is cozy, even on frosty nights down to the high 20 degrees Fahrenheit. On warmer nights, open a zip on the footbox to ventilate and cool the bag. This 2-pound 2-ounce bag also comes in a separate woman’s version called the Spark.

Kelty Coromell Sleeping Bag

Although at 2 lbs 13 ounces it is a bit heavier than the other bags, but the Kelty Coromell Sleeping Bag offers high performance at a much cheaper price than most popular bags, which earned it Backpacker's Bargain Award for 2009. Available at about $100 to $150 dollars, as of June 2010, this bag is more than $100 dollars cheaper than many of its competitors. Although this bag lacks a hood, it is rated down to 25 degrees Fahrenheit and provides plenty of warmth for 3-season camping in most environments. It also features a semi-rectangular cut which will be appreciated by larger campers and, according to Backpacker, unzips into a blanket which is wide enough for two campers.
