Recreational kayaks are built for the casual paddler who might want to boat in a variety of water, including easy whitewater, lakes, placid rivers and some sea kayaking. While the boats don't have the performance capabilities of serious whitewater or sea kayak boats, they can be used comfortably in easier paddling conditions and usually have some storage capacity for carrying food and extra clothing.

Dagger

Dagger builds some of the better whitewater boats, including several for extreme creek kayaking. They also make several recreational boats that have internal storage and deck rigging to store items for quick access. In 2010, Dagger recreational kayaks range in price from $400 to $900. Dagger also offers the same boat model in different lengths--the longer models for better tracking in a straight line or shorter for maneuverability. Its entry-level model is the Zydeco, while those looking for more performance prefer the Axis.

Old Town

Old Town offers general purpose boats in several different styles. The Vapor is one of its more popular models and is made in 10-foot and 12-foot lengths. The XT versions of the Vapor have a more comfort-oriented seat that flexes with each paddle stroke. In 2010, the Vapors are priced from $400 to $650. Old Town also makes the more performance-oriented Dringo in several lengths, and both a standard and XT model. The Dringo is also offered in a tandem version.

Wilderness Systems

Wilderness Systems specializes in recreational and touring kayaks that offer both a stable ride and comfort in the cockpit. The Pamlico is offered in 10-foot and 12-foot single versions, and 13.5-, 14.5- and 16-foot tandem versions. The Pamlico is designed to offer a combination of speed and ease of use. The Pungo is Wildernes Systems more advanced, performance-oriented version, and is offered in 10-, 12- and 14-foot versions, as well as a 12-foot ultralight version. In 2010, Wilderness Systems recreational boats are priced from $535 to $825.
