Voyageurs National Park is 200,000 acres of pristine forests and five main lakes on the U.S. and Canada border. Most of the areas may be reached only by boat as the lakes make it more of a water-based park. All of the waterways are linked. Hiking the many trails is very popular, as is fishing for smallmouth bass and walleye. Experiencing nature is the major attraction to this park. It is open year-round.

Voyageurs National Park

Voyageurs National Park offers a great nature experience, and you may experience it in much the same way French explorers did more than 200 years ago. Nearly all of the campsites are accessible only by boat. People also use houseboats to camp on the lakes.

There are 200 primitive campsites along the shores of four lakes: Kabetogama, Namakan, Rainy and Sand Point. The sites have a tent pad, fire ring, primitive toilet, picnic table and a bear-proof storage locker. Houseboat sites have the same setup with mooring posts for the boats.

There is no cost or reservations required. Camping at the sites is on a first-come first-served basis. Registration is required and there is a 14-day limit on any one campsite.

Trails End Resort

The Trails End Resort is a great place to experience the great north in its own right, but it can also provide a gateway to Voyaguers for those that don't want to explore the park by boat.

Trails End has campground facilities with sites in the woods and on streams. Some of the sites have electricity and water. There are bathrooms and showers available. The campground has a bar and restaurant.

Cabins are also available. The cabins have heat, stove, refrigerator, microwave and two beds.

This campground is open year-round.

Ash River Campground

The Ash River Campground has eight primitive camping sites and provides access to the Voyaguers National Park lakes. There is a common water source, as well as outdoor toilets. The campground, operated by the state, provides the barest of necessities and is there to provide access to Voyaguers.

Adjacent to the campground is a boat ramp. Also nearby is the Woodenfrog Campground, which has an area on the lake for camping. It is primitive, with a public restroom and a community water supply. Both are in the Kabetogama National Forest and are operated by the Bear Head State Park.
