Summer is here, and kids without school are restless and bored. Summer camp is a time-tested tradition, but if your kids aren't quite ready for sleep-away camp miles and miles from home, then these day camps in Maryland may be the perfect adventure-filled learning opportunity.

Terrapin Adventures Ultimate Adventure Camp

For kids seeking experience in outdoor leadership, Terrapin Adventures offers hiking, swimming, kayaking, sailing, horseback riding and more. Every day is a new adventure from at least 9 am to 4 pm (extended hours are available for a fee). Terrapin is open to boys and girls, ages 12 to 15 years. For $350 a week, your kids will come home exhausted from a wild day of exploration.

Summer Friends Day Camps

Summer Friends Day Camp offers a variety of camp curricula for kids ages 4 to 17. Anything from dancing to cooking to what they call "DayVentures"--which are day-long adventures in kayaking, rock climbing and even circus trapeze classes. The hours are from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, with the option for extended hours. Depending on which camp your child chooses, Summer Friends can cost anywhere from $365 a week to $450 a week. All that plus convenient bus transportation means your kids will have a busy, activity-packed summer at your convenience.

The Barrie Camp

Located on the 45-acre estate of The Barrie School, the regular day camp offers activities such as swimming, horse-back riding, sports, arts and crafts, dance, music, dramatics, canoeing, archery and karate, to name a few. They also offer several specialty camps, including Riding Camp and The Naturalists, a program that explores the botany, zoology and chemistry of the Earth. This camp is offered to children ages 4 to 14 years, and it costs anywhere from $300 to nearly $500 for Riding Camp.
