Ideas for a PVC Camper Shell

Pickup trucks have long beds off the cab designed for a myriad of purposes. Storage, hauling and livestock transport are possible with pickups. PVC camper shells are made to cover the bed of pickups, affording protection from the elements and an added measure of lockable security to payloads. These shells, also known as "toppers" are handy camping implements and the potential of customizing them for your endeavours is seemingly endless.

Beds

After market kits are available to make a sleeping shelf under the shell and above the bed of the truck, allowing storage underneath the sleeping platform. The space off the shell determines size of pad or mattress and how much storage is possible under the bed platform. Additionally, to add comfort and seasonal flexibility, adding fans powered from a generator or battery, or heaters give the truck shell climate control for inclement or hot weather.

Tarps

Several aftermarket tarps are available designed to give extra living and camping space when the truck is stationary. Tarps extend out from the open bed and shell on the rear of the pickup. Telescoping poles give the tarps stability and many of the tarps have drop down nylon or canvas walls for added privacy or wind/weather protection. Tarp and tent space is ideal for cooking out of the weather or wet gear storage after a day spent in the outdoors.

Electronics

Products are available to rig MP3 players, speakers or even small flat screen TVs and DVD players in the truck camping shells. Mounts for TV screens attach to the sides of the PVC shell and are retractable when the truck is in motion. Connect the electronics to a generator or battery. MP3 attachments attach to external speakers in the truck shell or to the internal cab speakers to listen to when driving.
