With the popularity of mountain biking has come a flooding of the market of bikes, frames and mountain biking products. In the early 1980s, there were a handful of bicycles being sold as mountain bikes. Today, there are hundreds of different models, for purposes ranging from cross country, downhill, free ride and all-mountain. Many bicycles are built specifically for female riders, some in 18-inch frame sizing. Depending on your riding style and needs, several stand out from the rest of the pack.

Cross Country Dual Suspension

The Santa Cruz Juliana is a dual suspension mountain bike (available in 18-inch frame) for women and designed for cross country and all-mountain riding. The Juliana receives 4.8 stars out of a possible five at the independent review site MTBR.com. Riders report ease of use, no power loss on the dual suspension and longevity with the Juliana. All-Mountain Bikes

For all-mountain riding (cross country with moderate downhill) the Specialized Myka FSR Expert Women's Specific receives four of five stars at the MTBR.com independent review site. The Myka is available in an 18-inch frame and uses Specialized's proprietary four bar linkage rear suspension. The four bar linkage prevents pedal bob (loss of power on uphill clubs) and keeps front and rear tire equally distant, even when under heavy use. Specialized offers a warranty on frames.

Free Ride

The Trek Fuel WSD (Women's Specific Design) receives five of five stars at the MTBR.com review site. Riders report having more confidence on downhills because of the solid feel of the suspension and bicycle. A dual suspension system uses a linkage on the rear tire to give solid performance for downhill rides and little to no power loss on uphill climbs. The Trek WSD is available in an 18-inch frame. Riders also write the bicycle is stout and withstands the hard use of free riding.
