Things to Do in the Catskill Mountains
The Catskill Mountains are located between New York City and Albany, New York. They are a popular vacation destination because of the serene natural landscape and the many recreational opportunities, including hiking, biking and fishing. Visitors will find many attractions and one-of-a-kind towns that offer entertainment and shopping.

Bear Creek Recreation Park

Bear Creek Recreation Park is located in Hunter, New York, in the central Catskill Mountains. It has a full-service restaurant and bar serving American cuisine, as well as a fireplace and game room. There is an enclosed paintball area with moveable obstacles; all gear and equipment are included with play. Bear Creek has an 18-hole miniature golf course and 20-pad golf driving range with mountain views. There is a large wooded tract adjacent to the facility where guests can rent a snowmobile or a horse for trail riding. The park is also home to many seasonal celebrations, with vendors and attractions.

Delaware and Ulster Railroad

The Delaware and Ulster Railroad offers scenic train rides through the Catskill Mountains. The Delaware and Ulster Railroad Depot is located in Arkville, New York, and features historical memorabilia from the trains past. Train rides are just under two hours and traverse the tracks from Arkville to Roxbury and back. There are several cars, including a glass roof observation car and open-air flatbed car. There also is a special dinner train, available by reservation only, that combines fine dining and a scenic train ride through the mountains. The Delaware and Ulster Railroad has an unused 26-mile section of track that is now a hiking and biking trail through the forested mountain landscape.

Thompson's Lake State Park

Thompson's Lake State Park is a New York State Park located on the northern edge of the Catskill Mountains. It features a large sandy beach on Thompson's Lake, with a swimming area and beach house with modern restrooms, private showers and a snack bar. You can rent rowboats and paddleboats for use on the lake, where you can fish for largemouth bass and bluegill. Adjacent to the beach is a 140-campsite campground with partial hookups, fire rings and picnic tables at each site. A large portion of the park is wooded, undulating terrain, and there are several hiking and biking trails.
