Hiking Vacations in Ireland

Ireland's moniker as the "Emerald Island" speaks to its great natural beauty, and most outdoors enthusiasts know the best way to take in the countryside is by walking through it. A number of vacation packages for Ireland offer both day hikes and cross-country hiking, as well as guided and self-guided options. Most handle the traveler's luggage and planning, leaving him free to focus on enjoying the countryside.

Contours Walking Holidays

Contours Walking Holidays offers support for self-guided hiking vacations across the British Isles, with two tour packages for Ireland. These are the Dingle Way and the Kerry Way, both circuits of more than 100 miles around peninsulas in southwestern Ireland on the Atlantic Ocean. The two peninsulas are side-by-side, so with a short bus transfer, you could combine the two tours into one expedition. The support offered by Contours includes a guidebook, maps, daily luggage transfer and overnight accommodations at bed-and-breakfasts. Both the Kerry and Dingle tours have a full-length and a shortened highlights-only option.

REI Adventures

Most outdoors enthusiasts are already familiar with REI through its nationwide chain of stores, but the company also has an adventure vacation unit that offers an Irish "Coast to Coast" guided tour. The tour crosses Ireland over 10 days, moving first from Dublin to Bray to see the east coast and the Irish Sea. It then goes west to the Dingle Peninsula, then turns north to Shannon. However, you don't actually hike from point to point. You go to each day's destination by motor transport, then spend the day hiking through various points of interest, ending up at the evening's pick-up area. The "Coast to Coast" tour includes hotel accommodations, fees for parks and museums on the itinerary, all meals and the daily luggage transfer.

Country Walkers

An American company, Country Walkers has worldwide hiking vacation packages with a handful of Irish options. An example is the Connemara and Galway Bay Tour. Starting and ending in Shannon, the tour hikes five to eight miles per day over six days, exploring the cliffs, castles and pubs of central-west Ireland, as well as visiting the only true fjord in Ireland. The tour is led by two guides, with all accommodations, most meals, all admission fees and some basic travel insurance coverage included.
