Free Campgrounds in Washington County, Minnesota

Washington County, Minnesota, in the east-central portion of the state, is dotted with many small lakes and pockets of boreal forest. Fishing, swimming, road and mountain biking and bird watching are all available in the county. If you are traveling through the county via RV and seeking free camping, the options are very limited. Tent camping on the cheap is equally limited.

Walmart

Walmart allows overnight parking and RV camping in their retail outlets parking lots. Washington County, Minnesota has several Walmarts, including the Oak Park center. There are no hookups; your RV should be self-contained with water holding systems and generators. There are lights throughout the parking area for the safety of RV campers and store patrons. Minnesota's Big Marine Park Reserve is within a 30-minute drive and offers fishing and hiking.

Point Douglas Park

Point Douglas Park is located along US Highway 10 and serves dual purpose. In addition to being a park with barbecue grills, picnic tables, toilets and fresh water it is also a rest stop for the US Highway. No vehicle fees are charged to park and rest at the park. Overnight resting and camping is permitted. Longer stays are not allowed. RVs must be self-contained as there are no hookups. Tent camping is not permitted. Pets are allowed and there is a small pet walk area. The park is next to the the St. Croix River, where there is fishing and boating.

Grand Meadow

The website Free Campsites, lists Grand Meadow as providing free RV parking and camping at the small lake outside the township. There are toilets, water and level sites for camping. Maximum allowed stays are three days. Electric connections are available for a fee. Pets are allowed and there is fishing at the lake. The park is part of the city of Grand Meadow's municipal parks system. Pets are allowed if leashed.
