Camping at Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia

Smith Mountain Lake is located in southern Virginia, less than 30 miles from the town of Roanoke. The lake is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains and has numerous recreational opportunities. Hiking, biking, boating, swimming and fishing are all available on and around the lake. Camping sites at Smith Mountain Lake are abundant as are private rental cabins.

Smith Lake Mountain State Park

Smith Mountain Lake State Park is located on the north shore and within 40 miles of Roanoke. The park has cabins and a campground and offers public land for recreation. The campground has 25 tent sites, five pull-through RV sites and 19 back-in RV sites. All of the sites have a fire pit with a cooking grill and RV sites have hookups for water, 20- and 30-amp electrical hookups, and a separate bathroom with showers is available. It is open from March 1 through the first Monday in December and provides a trail to the lake, 13 hiking trails, boat launch, picnic shelters and opportunities for fishing, swimming and hunting.

Eagle's Roost Campground

The Eagle's Roost Campground is located between the state park and the Parkway Marina. The campground has RV and tent sites and many of the campers book their site for the entire season. It opens in early April and closes in late October and campers have access to a boat ramp, boat slips, bathrooms, showers, sandy beach and canoe rentals. The seasonal occupants also have regular gatherings and campfire entertainment. The campsites have hookups for 30 amps and water and three dumping stations sit on the property.

Blue Ridge Campground

The Blue Ridge Campground opens April 1 and closes Oct. 31. The campground is primarily for RVs and many of the sites are filled by seasonal campers. RV sites have hookups for water, sewer and 30 amps and come in sizes to fit pop-up campers, pull behind trailers and full size campers. The campground has horseshoe pits, picnic areas, volleyball courts, a pavilion and access to the lake for fishing and boating. It is also within minutes of hiking trails. Attached to the campground is a private marina with a boat launch and boat slips for campground guests.
