For seaside backcountry camping, head across the bay to camp at the South Padre Island National Seashore's Malachite campground. Camping is primitive, no hookups, but there are showers, toilets and fire rings. Wake in the morning to surf, fish, sea kayak, bird watch or stroll the miles of white sand beach. Pets are not allowed. If your timing is right, attend a guided ranger-walk to the sea turtle egg beaches when the turtles come in to lay the eggs.
