The Best Bluegill Fishing Lakes

Lepomis macrochirus, the bluegill, is a sport fish found throughout North America. Anglers go for bluegill using light and medium tackle in rivers and lakes. If you ask 100 fishermen what the best lake is for bluegill, you will probably end up with 100 different answers. But throughout the United States, there are a few lakes that stand out from the rest for bluegill angling.

Southwest-Lake Conroe, Texas

Lake Conroe, Texas, is a 20,000-acre lake west of Houston on the outskirts of the Sam Houston National Forest. Lake Conroe has bluegill that "grow to enormous sizes," according to the Texas Department of Fish and Wildlife. Rangers with the TDFW report interviewing anglers with, "12-inch bluegills in their creels." Rangers recommend fishing the lake along the rip-rap and fishing deep near the toe of the slope of the lake.

Midwest-Stockton Lake, Missouri

Stockton Lake, in Stockton State Park, Missouri, is one of the Midwest's best bluegill lakes. Stockton Lake is a deep lake with abundant aquatic vegetation, which makes is prime waters for bluegill. The lake covers more than 25,000 acres. The Missouri Department of Conservation reports the lake is one of the cleanest in the state. The MDC stocks the lake yearly and governs 55 fish beds for healthy fisheries, bluegill included.

Southeast-Beaver Lake, Arkansas

Beaver Lake, Arkansas, is reported as a top bluegill lake. The lake/reservoir is northeast of Springdale, Arkansas, and occupies 28,000 acres. Arkansas State Fisheries Biologists work the lake gathering information on the various species and overall health of this deep, clean lake. According to at the Fishingnotes.com, bream (bluegill) fishing here is some of the best in the state. Guides writing in at the website report success along the vegetation near the shores and under overhanging trees and structures.
