Cleanest Ohio Fishing Lakes

Ohio has historically been maligned for its water quality and the pollution of Lake Erie. Cleveland was once called the "mistake by the lake," but has enjoyed a renaissance along the shores of a revitalized and cleaned Lake Erie. Many lakes and water sources in Ohio have been enjoying the Clean Ohio project and the benefits it brings. Anglers and fishermen benefit with the clean lakes and water sources.

Muddy Creek has been a focus of the Clean Ohio Project, a four tiered environmental program set-up to revitalize the state's natural heritage and clean up much of the urban degradation from years past. Muddy Creek is a tributary from Lake Erie and is a vital component of migratory fish species coming out of Lake Erie. The creek is a safe, clean and vibrant place to fish, with very few warnings taking place or restrictions on fish consumption from the fish taken out of the tributary. Muddy Creek is part of the Ohio River Watershed and covers almost 5.6 square miles. While it is a slow flowing creek and not a lake, it flows out of Lake Erie and is some of the cleanest water in the state to fish. Muddy Creek is in Hamilton County outside of Cleveland, and can be accessed from the Creek Bend Farm.

Apple Valley Lake

Lake Erie is cleaning up.

Apple Valley Lake is a 511 acre lake with almost 10 miles of shoreline located in Howard, Ohio. The lake is considered one of the cleanest lakes in the state due to two reasons, according to the Apple Valley Resort website. The lake is as clean as it is because no home along the lake has a septic system that is private, meaning there is no leaching into the lake. All homes use the county septic and water system. Second, the lake is deep and dam fed, providing an oxygen rich environment for the region and water. Fishing in the lake is allowed, and is particularly good around the dam area where the water flows and oxygen levels are the highest.

Castaway Lake

Cast Away Lake is a pay-to-fish lake located in near East Danville, southwest of Hillsboro, Ohio. The lake is one of the cleanest in the state due to the use of one top aerator and six bottom diffusers, which act as large cleaners (much like a household aquarium) to the lake. The lake is stocked each week during the stocking season (early spring to April.) Fishing is catch and release except for channel catfish.
