Summer camp is a great opportunity to introduce your children to new sports and people. Summer camp programs can also be used to develop specialized interest in a current activity. New York City offers a huge diversity of summer camp programs focusing on outdoor activities, arts and crafts and specialized instruction in a variety of programs. New York City summer camps are offered as weekday day camps, most with drop-off around 8:30 a.m. and pick up around 3 p.m., depending on age. Expect to spend between $700 and $1,300 per week to send your children to summer camp in New York City.

Basketball City's NYC Summer Camps

Basketball City's New York programs are based at Hunter College on 68th and Lexington in Manhattan. Camps are offered for children ages 8 to 17. Each year camps include instruction from a variety of NBA greats. Go to basketballcity.com for more information.

Chelsea Piers is a renowned Manhattan sports complex located at 23rd Street and 11th Avenue. NYC Summer Sailing Camp

Camp Applause

Camp Applause is a theater camp based out of the St. Jean Baptiste Community Center on 76th Street between 3rd and Lexington in Manhattan. The camp is geared toward ages 5 to 13 and explores a new theater-based curriculum each week. Go to applauseny.com/camp/upper-east-side for more information.

Artscape at Harlem School of the Arts

Artscape at Harlem School of the Arts, located at 645 St. Nicholas Ave at 142nd St, allows campers to focus in one of four areas: dance, music, theater or visual arts. The Creative Arts and Music Programs (CAMP) are based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, at 361 Manhattan Ave at Jackson St. Campers participate in a well-rounded arts curriculum that includes songwriting, art, dance and music. Summer Art Colony

The summer art program offered at the Children's Museum of the Arts on Governor's Island (an 8-minute ferry ride from downtown Manhattan) includes experimentation with film and landscape drawing, visits from local artists and outdoor playtime. Brooklyn Cultural Adventures Program

This camp is designed around cultural Brooklyn field trips. The program is run by the Heart of Brooklyn Foundation, based in Crown Heights. Over the course of the summer children will visit locations such as the Prospect Park Zoo, the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and the Brooklyn Children's Museum.
