Cougar Peak Lookout

About 10 air miles north of Thompson Falls in the small town of Plains, Cougar Peak Lookout was erected in 1952. Originally manned by firefighters during the fire season, aerial observers took over that responsibility in 1979. Since then the lookout has served as a guesthouse for people who need a place to stay inside Lolo National Forest. The 14- by 14-foot lookout can accommodate two to four people. It is sparsely furnished with a single bed, a table, some chairs, and a wood stove. Guests who want to cook their own food can gather firewood near the lookout.
