A lagoon is an area of shallow water divided from the sea by a barrier of sand, coral reefs or low banks. Coastal lagoons are characterized by a mixture of salt and freshwater. Game fish that can be found in lagoons vary but may include redfish and trout. Different areas of lagoon provide specific habitat needs for fishes including open water, vegetation and tidal creeks. Numerous lures work effectively when catching lagoon fish species.

Topwater plugs

Topwater plugs are very effective for trout lagoon fishing. Plugs like MirrOlure are recommended as one of the top artificial baits for Mosquito Lagoon fishing by Captain David Rogers from Reel Reports. MirrOlure topwater plugs offer a variety of selection such as Top Dog, Top Dog Jr. and Poppa Dog. These topwater baits have plenty of action and colorful schemes that attract fish very well. They are also great baits for covering a lot of water. Colors available include chartreuse, red, green and black.

Spoons

Gold spoons are reliable artificial baits and are one of the most productive baits for lagoon fishing. Reel Reports recommend Hakala Spoons which come in a variety of other colors such as nickel, red, chartreuse, black and pink. These spoons' bright colors and lively movement work well to attract lagoon fish. It also features a slow sinking design and a stainless steel hook. Anglers find spoons easy to use due to their rigged design and weed guards.

Live bait

Live baits are effective on all major lagoon fish species including redfish, spotted seatrout, snook and tarpon. Shrimp and mullet work well especially when fishing shallow waters over grass flats. Fish like to feed on expansive sea grass flats of lagoons where algae form. These algae provide food for young shrimp and mullet that the predator fish like to feed on. Check the bait shops in your area to see what local live baits are available.

Spinners

Spinners are also effective in lagoon fishing. Tom Stienstra, author of "Moon California Fishing" recommends spinners for fishing in Stone Lagoon. Spinners such as Jake's spinners in gold color with red spots are productive especially for sea cutthroat trout fishing. Spinners work well for spin-casting, jigging or trolling and can also be used for either fresh or saltwater. There are plenty of colors available including white with red dots, black with yellow dots and silver with red dots.
