Mountain bike riding at night can be a risky endeavor without proper lights. Experienced cyclists going on long, tough rides understand the importance of having the best equipment, reducing the chances of accidents and making their ride more enjoyable. Bike experts, including the world's leading cycling publisher, Bicycling Magazine, with help from real cyclists routinely test and review mountain bike lights, determining their quality and selecting the best.

Cygolite Mitycross 300 LED Light

This Cygolite model was the recipient of Bicycling Magazine's 2010 Buyer's Guide Award. The twin-bulb Mitycross 300 LED disperses light across a wide area and can operate for 3½ hours on the highest of its six settings, which include brightness and flashing. This Cygolite system weighs 240 grams. It is weather-proof, and it is capable of fitting on different size handlebar mounts.

CatEye Single Shot

This CatEye model weighs 122 grams and its one-watt LED projects its light up to 10 meters. The CatEye Single Shot can operate for more than two hours on its high beam setting and 24 hours on the flash setting. It also offers a low-beam setting. The CatEye Single Shot Plus recharges on a direct charging port, allowing cyclists to plug it into any electrical socket. The Single Shot received Bicycling Magazine's Buyers Guide Award in 2009 and has received outstanding reviews from other bike experts, including Bikeradar.com.

CatEye Hybrid

This technologically advanced design won the Eurobike Award in 2009. The CatEye Hybrid offers a dual battery design. A solar cell charges a nickel-metal hydride battery that operates for more than two hours on the constant light setting or six hours in flashing mode. In addition, the CatEye Hybrid comes equipped with standard AA battery settings allowing for 10 hours of constant lighting or 30 hours of flashing use.
