West Des Moines, Iowa, is southwest of the state capital of Des Moines, immediately east of state highway 28. The town straddles the intersection of I-235 (which becomes I-80 west of I-35) and I-35. This part of Iowa is largely farming country, although several large corporations are headquartered in West Des Moines, including Farm Bureau Financial Services, the Kum & Go chain of convenience stores and Hy-Vee. Recreational opportunities include hunting (mainly for game birds) and water sports on nearby lakes and rivers. Walnut Woods State Park also is located close to West Des Moines.
