Kahului is overshadowed by Haleakala Crater and other Maui attractions in the eyes of most tourists. This small village features the island's major airport, which floods with tourists during the winter and spring. This 143-acre state park surrounds Kanaha Pond, offering views of native Hawaiian birds and fish. Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary fills each December with Canadian geese fleeing the harsh winters of North America for Hawaii. Attentive travelers notice former bunkers and relics dating back to the U.S. Army's World War II base in Kahului. The pond is framed by unpaved hiking trails frequented by runners and bird-watchers.
