The volcanic island of Ischia, Italy, has beckoned many a traveler to her mountainside spas, windswept beaches and subtropical gardens. The northern coast of the island can become crowded during July and August, but if you venture inland or take a hike up Mount Epomeo you can escape the throngs of tourists. Ischia has several accommodations on its quiet southwest coast that, although not all traditional hostels, will provide comfort and very reasonable prices.

Ring Hostel

Ring Hostel is currently the only traditional hostel on the island. You do not need to be a member of a hostel association to stay there, and the hostel has the cheapest beds available for online booking. Rooms can be booked from April through October. Breakfast, linens and 24-hour Internet are included in the room rate. Television, video library, kitchen and hostel games for provided free. There is also free transportation offered every night to a nearby family restaurant. The hostel has a young, party feel to it, and there are many activities for guests to participate in such as cooking classes, parties, and basic Italian language. There is no curfew and no lockout. Rooms rates vary by season. As of 2009, the rates range from 15 euros per bed in a 12-bed mixed dorm to 22.5 euros per person for a double room.

La Rotunda Sul Mare

You may think that apartments with private sundecks, views, and private kitchenettes would be a lot more expensive than hostels or hotels. But think again, because as of 2009 you can book a 6-bed private apartment for just 19 euros per person. This rate is great for families or groups. There are also 5-bed, 4-bed and triple private apartments, as well as twins and doubles, which are just 48 euros per night per room in 2009, which makes them cheaper than the rooms at Hotel Poggio del Sole and just a few euros more than the rooms for two in Ring Hostel. For couples, this is probably the best value you'll get on Ischia. Breakfast, sheets and towels are included in the room rates.
