Featuring oak-covered hills, fields of vineyards and picturesque valleys, the scenic town of Windsor is situated in the heart of Sonoma County's wine county. Located 60 miles north of San Francisco, visitors to the Russian Valley area can enjoy tours of local wineries, luxurious spa treatments, the public golf course and the thriving Windsor Farmers' Market as well as live summer concerts and seasonal festivals. Whether you prefer to explore the countryside by bicycle, on foot or floating in a hot air balloon, there are plenty of things to do and see in this quaint California town.

Mueller Winery

The local Mueller Winery produces limited quantities of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Syrah and Pinot Gris, which are sold in select fine wine shops and regional restaurants. Make an appointment for a tour and tasting at the winery, located on Starr Road in the heart of Russian River wine country.

Spoke Folk Cyclery

Located one town over in Healdsburg, this bicycle shop offers bike rentals and organized rides, and would be happy to help you plan a route suitable to your ability and experience so you can traverse as part of a group or on your own. Avoid heavy traffic and enjoy scenic views of Sonoma County with a variety of personalized bike routes, including difficult climbs, long smooth flats and winding descents. A guided tour of the Windsor-Healdsburg Loop is a moderately difficult 40 mile ride that lasts approximately 3.5 hours and features hills and rolling terrain with views of vineyards and farmlands. Some of the roads on the route have moderate traffic.

Farmers' Market

Stroll through the old downtown section of Windsor, and purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at the farmers market at the Town Green. The market features live music and is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays from May through November as well as Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. from June through August. Special events are frequently presented during the weekly scheduled markets, including the Annual Tomato & Pepper Festival, the Annual Pumpkin Festival and the Zucchini Festival.

Balloon Rides

Enjoy panoramic views of the pretty countryside while drifting along in a hot air balloon. Guests meet at the Sonoma County Airport then travel to the launch site. Depending upon the wind currents and altitude, the one-hour flight may travel between three and 10 miles and may include views of the Pacific Ocean, Napa Valley and even San Francisco on a clear day. After landing, everyone is transported back to the airport to pick up their vehicles so they can drive to the Kendall-Jackson Winery for a gourmet brunch featuring warm quiche, strawberries dipped in chocolate, fresh fruit, local cheeses, coffee cake, coffee, juice and champagne. Each rider receives a personalized flight certificate as well as a cloisonne pin depicting the balloon of your flight.
