For the Feet
Hiking shoes and boots, like any other shoe are made in men's as well as women's sizes and styles. Women generally have smaller feet than men and it is easier to shop for hiking boots in a certain size range. Women's hiking socks are another thing that women hikers like to wear, simply because they are made in women's specific sizes and colors, such as pink, purple, light blue or lime green, for example. Gaiters, which are worn in ankle height or knee height are used to keep out moisture, mud, dirt and cold and are interchangeable no matter the sex of the hiker.
Packs and Pants
Packs for backpacking are made in unisex as well as women specific designs. These designs are different in that they offer smaller hip belts; a shorter torso (spine) adjustment and more adjustable chest straps that can clasp above the bosom instead over like many packs made without women in mind. It is not necessary for women to use a pack like this, but many find that it fits them better. Hiking shorts and pants are one thing that really are women specific. As with any other pair of pants for women, they must accommodate for hips. Length and design must be considered as well as adjustability and breathable fabric. Hiking pants that have a waist that do not interfere with any possible rubbing of a backpack's hip belt is also important.
Clothing and Other Gear
Base layers, mid layers and outer layers are much more enjoyable and functional for women hikers if they are designed with the curves of a woman in mind, not to mention some fabulous colors and patterns. Though it may not matter to all women, many find the cut of women specific shirts and jackets to be more comfortable as well as pleasing to wear fashion-wise. Gloves are another thing that some female hikers prefer to have in a women specific design. These are generally smaller to fit female hands better. There are a number of items, such as hats, hiking poles and headlamps, that are really only distinguished from male hiking gear by color alone.
