Highlands Nature Sanctuary
Originally known as the seven caves, the Highlands Nature Sanctuary is a 2,000-acre section of the Appalachian Forest with miles of hiking trails and several caves within the Rocky Fork Gorge area of the sanctuary. Three of the most popular trails in the sanctuary are the Valley of the Ancients, the Etawah Woods Loop Trail and the Big Beech Loop Trail, each one about a 1/4-mile hike winding through hemlock trees, limestone canyons and huge rock formations. The Highlands Nature Sanctuary is a great place for sightseeing and learning about the natural foliage and wildlife of eastern Ohio. The nature sanctuary also includes several natural springs and secluded grottoes along the trails.
