The town of Brunswick, Maine, located along the coast of the Pine Tree state, is just about 25 minutes north of the cultural hub of Maine. Home to Bowdoin College, this city has become a popular stopping point for those traveling up the coast. Ever since the early 18th century, when the first Germans in New England settled in Waldoboro, Maine has enjoyed a sizable German population. In fact, as of 1990, nearly 10 percent of the population identified German in their background. Not surprisingly, there are numerous German-style restaurants in the Brunswick area to honor this heritage.

Richard's Restaurant

Richard's Restaurant in Brunswick features authentic German-American cuisine every day except for Sunday. Traditional dishes include appetizers, such as Weinbergschnecken (snails with garlic herb butter) and bratwurst; entrees, such as Weinershnitzel (breaded pork tenderloin), Kasseler Rippchen (smoked pork chops), and Bauernwurst (German beef sausage); and German-style burgers, such as the Bavarian burger, served with Bavarian mustard and sauteed onions. Traditional soups include Deutsche Bauernsuppe (German farmer soup) and Ungarische Gulaschsuppe (Hungarian goulash soup). Don't forget to ask about the "hausgemachtes" or homemade specialties.
