After a long haul in the great outdoors, the thought of getting inside for some hearty grub is quite appealing. Since Ohio isn't short on either of these pursuits, getting a decent steak after a day on the trail in the heart of it all should be easier than the day's hike.

Ponderosa of Athens

Athens is in beautiful country in southern Ohio, just short of Appalachia, where things start to get hilly and green. Picturesque Ohio University is tucked into Athen's surrounding hills, as is the Riddle State Nature Preserve and Strouds Run State Park. The nearby commercial area is where you'll find the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Athens. The Ponderosa is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Bonanza of Waverly

Also situated in southern Ohio, the town of Waverly has Ohio's only Bonanza Steakhouse. But that's not all Waverly offers; situated in Pike County, Waverly is next to the Scioto River and the Erie Canal in Appalachia. The county itself is named after explorer Zebulon Pike, and the surrounding area offers plenty of opportunity to keep the tradition of exploration alive. The Bonanza offers a hearty meal after a day of hiking or kayaking. The Ponderosa is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m Friday and Saturday.

Ponderosa of Lancaster

Lancaster, in central Ohio, is near the Hocking River and is rife with both American and Native American history. Much of this can be taken in at Lancaster's Rising Park, where visitors can climb a bluff the Native Americans coined "Standing Stone," scale Mt. Pleasant or take in the "Devil's Kitchen" cave. When all that's said and done Ponderosa waits in town. The Ponderosa is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m Friday and Saturday.

Ponderosa of Defiance

While southern Ohio offers a bit more nature, or at least the kind a hiker and climber would be looking for, northern Ohio shouldn't be overlooked. The town of Defiance, in northwestern Ohio, is named after Fort Defiance--important in America's early history. At the confluence of the Auglaize and Maumee rivers, Defiance is also home to Independence Dam State Park. The park offers many activities, including fishing, boating and camping, and there is a towpath along the rivers for hiking and climbing. But when it's time to pack up for a prepared meal, Ponderosa awaits. The Ponderosa is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
