Letchwood State Park is often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of the East." Located between Buffalo and Rochester, New York, the park is characterized by lush forests, the Genesee River with its three high water falls, and the historic Glen Iris Inn. Letchworth has been a popular destination park since the early 20th century.

Boating and Fishing

The Genesee River that runs through the park is marked by some very high waterfalls, but canoeing and kayaking on the river are still possible, as are whitewater rafting and kayaking. There are two designated areas for fishing along the river, plus local ponds.

Trails

The park features 66 miles of hiking trails. Some of these offer access to lovely views of the three major waterfalls of the Genesee River, which are the park's major attraction. Some of these trails overlap with trails that allow mountain biking and horseback riding.

Winter Activities

In the winter, snowmobilers take over most of the trails. Some hiking trails become cross-country skiing-only routes. Other favorite winter activities include snow tubing and snowshoeing.

Glen Iris Inn

Another major attraction in the park is the historic home of William Pryor Letchworth, now the Glenn Iris Inn. His cliff-top manor was the center of a 1,000-acre estate, which was left to the state of New York to be used as a park after his death in 1906. This lovely 19th century home now serves as the park lodge, with a restaurant and accommodations for visitors.
