While many think of New York City as jam-packed with skyscrapers, bumper-to-bumper traffic and photo-snapping tourists, the Big Apple offers more outdoor havens than first meets the eye. The city has 350 miles of landscaped pedestrian and cyclist paths that crisscross five boroughs, along with the 843-acre Central Park and Manhattan's Riverbank State Park, which has an Olympic-size pool and docks for excursion and fishing boats.

Belleclaire Hotel

This Upper West Side hotel, located along a tree-lined street, provides travelers a respite from Manhattan's hustle and bustle. Two blocks from the Hudson River and three blocks from Central Park, Belleclaire offers rooms with classically styled furniture, picture windows, free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. After a long day of exploration, you can schedule a massage or relax in a bed fitted with hypoallergenic comforters and pillows.

The hotel has a state-of-the-art fitness center and offers breakfast vouchers for nearby restaurants. Other dining options include Niko's Mediterranean Grill and Bistro, Manhattan Diner and the pan-Asian Ruby Foo's, all of which are a block from the hotel. Economy rooms offer shared baths at less than half the lowest price of suites.

Hotel Beacon

Frommer's calls Hotel Beacon's one- and two-bedroom suites "some of the best bargains in the city." The 260-room lies three blocks from Central Park's The Ramble, a 38-acre wilderness area that houses 250 bird species--including 20 species of warblers during April and October migrations--and features rocky outcrops, forests and a winding stream. All accommodations offer free Wi-Fi, same-day dry cleaning and Gilchrist & Soames bath products. Suites have living rooms with sofa beds and fully equipped kitchens.

Although this Upper West Side hotel doesn't have its own restaurant, you can walk a few blocks to PD O'Hurley's Bar and Grill, Planet Sushi or Gray's Papaya, which is famous for its inexpensive New York-style hot dogs and fresh papaya drinks.
